Garbstore – Men’s Meg Company & Monitaly

MORE ABOUT MEG COMPANY & MONITALY

Meg Company & Monitaly / Shoes Meg Company & Monitaly Meg Company & Monitaly Meg Company & Monitaly

Meg Company & Monitaly

The sleepy coastal town of Hermosa Beach holds one of the clothing industry’s best kept secrets, which is known as Meg Company, Inc. Keeping the community alive since 1989, Meg Company is connected to Hermosa Beach more than just geographically. The kind of company that can be defined as quaint or comfortable. That’s because the belief in moderate growth and tight knit friendships built over years of trust and dedication. A philosophy of diligence, consistency, and fraternity within Meg Company will prevail over all things tangible. Meg Company produce the stunning Yuketen shoe line, Monitaly rugged out doors wear, Santa Domingo Boots, Chamula South American scarfs and knits.

MONITALY

Meg Company’s original brand, Monitaly was launched in 1997, which took over the spirit of Meg Company’s earlier brand, Hello Hello Clothing. The name Monitaly is made up of the designer’s favorite things, which is the name Monica (designer’s daughter’s), Military, and Italy. Monitaly’s motto is vintage detail, quality and comfort. Monitaly has developed as the brand imports any kind of culture, in an out of box kind of way. The brand’s mission is to touch hearts with people who wear these clothes, and to keep growing.

SANTA DOMINGO BOOTS

Santo Domingo Boots was launched by Meg Company in 1997. The Santo Domingo brand is best known for high-end and best-quality Goodyear-welted Western Boots, Engineer Boots and other styles of boots and shoes. Santo Domingo Boots are made by artisans at the factory that have been making quality boots since the 1930’s in Mexico. They make every single boot by hand with their traditional techniques.

The leather that is used to make Santo Domingo Boots is hand-cut gently by scissors and nailed to the last by hand (bench made). The bench made manufacturing process allows the leather to retain it’s original texture and strength. Factory policy mandates that all shoes remain on the last for at least ten days or until the leather adapts to the perfect shape of the last. Some designs require small wooden stakes pounded by hand into the heel which is a technique has been used for centuries. Thus, it takes significant time and effort to make great quality Santo Domingo Boots.

One key special feature of Santo Domingo Boots is the leather insole and heel counter. The leather used for the leather insole and heel counter is naturally vegetable tanned and sanded by hand to expose the first layer of flesh underneath the grain finish thus improving breathability. The heel counter is extended to its arch, so that the boots have amazing arch support. The great design and functional structure of Santo Domingo Boots keep satisfying the lucky wearer in every way.

In addition to the high-end line, Santo Domingo Boots has extended production to a casual collection approximately one year ago. The casual collection boasts modern taste at an affordable price so that a wider audience of customers can enjoy wearing leather boots and shoes daily.

CHAMULA

Chamula products are very warm and soft because they are made of Merino wool which comes from sheep grazing in the Mexican Mountains. Don’t confuse your grandpa’s itchy old sweater with Chamula! Chamula sweaters feel great on your skin. Mexican natives hand-make Chamula products one by one for all production processes such as dyeing and knitting, so each product is one of a kind and very original. The more you wear it, the deeper its texture gets. It will be your must-have garment in the winter!

YUKETEN

Classic made in U.S.A. footwear and luggage are exceptional as traditional artifacts of the rugged and refined American past. Since 1985, designer Yuki Matsuda has paid homage to the American crafts and traditions by treasure hunting for outstanding examples of footwear and luggage in remote locales spread out across the rolling Appalachians to the high Sierras.

During Yuki’s quests for American rarities, he befriended several footwear, luggage, leather, and blanket artisans whose personalities and skills are more beautiful and pure than their output. Yuketen exists from the lessons and heritage gleaned from these men and women, their respected predecessors.

Each Yuketen article begins with utmost thought and research and is constructed solely by aged hands of high-skill and years of experience. They choose only the most durable and precious raw materials such as all-vegetable tanned leather, which is exclusive to Yuketen luggage products, or American naked leather unique for it’s heavy, thick, and soft characteristics. Yuketen products’ finishing touches are made by the owner’s individual insignias; the outline of their footprint, crease-marks from the bend of their ankle, imprints from their hands, color shed from their skin, mementos of their lifetime.

A visit with Couverture and the Garbstore

Kate, one of E-tail’s lovely Account Manager’s tells us about her visit with Nottinghill retailer Couverture and The Garbstore -
Sometimes I am such a lucky ducky with my job and get to go and do the best things. I had a fantastic day out to London last week to visit clients. First was a stop at Dahlia, they’re a Topshop brand, but also stocked in ASOS. They have their own website and are one of our clients. They have really gorgeous vintage style dresses. They design their own products in-house, which nowadays is difficult to find in a commercial, womens brand as most brands just buy their styles and material from giant wholesalers. Click here to join their Affiliate campaign

The second half of the day was spent at Couverture and the Garbstore. They’re based in Nottinghill, right round the corner from the Little Travel Bookstore from the film Nottinghill. I was lucky enough to have lunch with one of the owners Ian Paley (and of course Ewen). Ian is much sought after at the moment by fashion bloggers and retailers alike. He has a great history, working his way up as a small fry at Paul Smith, to a very big fry, then creating his own brand One True Saxon, then moving onto another brand; Garbstore. Garbstore is a very hot brand at the moment, Men’s only, unfortunately for us girls; stocked in exclusive Urban Outfitters, My-Wardrobe, StuartsLondon and even Fred Perry.

According to their website “Garbstore acts as a kind of time traveller for modern Garments, unlimited by style or genre. Vintage pieces are collected, restored and expanded upon using original fabrics that have been re-made to fit the purpose. Original Trimmings and good old style Talon and Scovill Zippers are used in favour of mass production options. We aim to create familiar Garments that have a foot in the past yet look to the future, with a few doffs of the hat on the way.
We re-imagine garments making them Historically new.

The way things last, the way things fit and how things feel are the mantra of the line.”

Ian and wife Emily (buyer/owner of Couverture) together own the partnership Couverture and the Garbstore, Nottinghill shop and website.

They have stocked a beautiful, clean and classic store. I had a tour round on Thursday and managed to get some pics. I’ll do my best with recalling the brands in the pics, but it was a few days ago and they are mens brands, so please excuse my memory!

Not sure which brand although it looks like this Garbstore jacket, so probably Garbstore!

“Nigo has always been a great believer in moving forward by building on the past. From the start over 18 years ago, much of A Bathing Ape and Nowhere and Busy Workshop was inspired by his vast collection of vintage clothing – always instilling his designs with his own hyper-real vision of the world.

Now Nigo has decided to dig even deeper into his legendary archive and, working with the foremost vintage replica company WAREHOUSE, he has created a new brand – HUMAN MADE.” Garbstore

The products they make can be buried in your backyard. They’re made of wholesome things that won’t hurt the earth or trees or worms, even the mean ones.”

Mina Perhonen

Akira Minagawa graduated from the famous Bunka Fashion College in Japan and worked as a pattern cutter before setting up his own label, Minä Perhonen in 1995. The name originates from Finnish, Minagawa being heavily influenced by the lifestyle and culture of that country, and translates as “I Butterfly”, his aim being “to make many beautiful designs like those of butterflies wings.”

Minä Perhonen collections are built on the principles of durable design, the clothes do not change radically each season but rather evolve, with fabrics re-used and elements re-worked.

Couverture recently had a preview evening for the brand. They projected a film of the collection on the one of the walls, Akira gave a short talk in Japanese (translated by a friend of his) and everyone was allowed to ask questions, get a book signed etc…

They tried to recreate the feel of his Paris showroom space in the store: Balloons tied with his trademark lace ribbon, weighted down with their ceramic tear drops. All hangers had Minä Perhonen lace attached to them. On the floor there were cut out carpet/ felt shapes as used in the Paris showroom

NORSE PROJECTS

Norse Projects was established in 2004 in the cold city of Copenhagen, Denmark. The goal was to create a truly international shop in Denmark which combines street, classic workwear and fashion culture, and immerses itself in the best of it. Today Norse Projects is widely recognised as one of Copenhagen’s finest shops and even have their own range of clothing.

The Woolrich Woolen Mills collection is a project that stems from the passion of the rediscovery of the American manufacturing tradition, of which Woolrich still represents an actual icon. It’s uniqueness is tied to the history and values of the Woolrich “working community”, a town that rises and develops around the Mill’s activities.

WOOLRIGH WOOLEN MILLS

The Woolrich Woolen Mills project originates from the desire to create unique items for their simplicity and authenticity, to give way to a different dress style that interprets the need of those who don’t need to be noticed and so are attracted by the “silent exclusivity” of the clothes.

The renewal of the USA manufacturing tradition is set in the concept “garment with a purpose”, made in USA or otherwise created with original fabrics, that unite the best industrial “standards” with assembled and functional details.

For the last five years Woolrich Woolen Mills have been under the creative direction of Daiki Suzuki, having fulfilled his five year contract he has now left the future of the company in the hands of the newly appointed Mark McNairy. Daiki will devote more time to his brand Engineered Garments – In the meantime we’re really looking forward to the results of Marks work…….

IKOU TSCHUSS

Innovative knitwear and accessory label Ikou Tschuss was launched in 2006, the result of a creative collaboration between stylist Guya Marini and artist’s assistant Carmen D’Apollonia. The name “Ikou” stems from the Japanese for “Let Go” and “Tschuss” from the Swiss German for “Bye Bye.”

The inspiration for the label’s signature crochet trimmed silk scarves originated from when Carmen lost her own scarf whilst riding her bicycle one day. The duo’s solution was to use their knitting expertise to weigh down the silk scarf’s edges, resulting in the subsequent birth of their trademark piece.

The collection for Autumn Winter 2011 includes hand knitted oversized boyfriend jumpers with heart motifs, fun mittens and bobble hats and plain or printed scarves with Ikou Tschuss’ crocheted edging of chunky yarns and brightly hued recycled threads.

CHARLOTTE LINTON NEW COLLECTION

Charlotte Linton cites the antique imagery of naturalists and narratives of colonial exploration ranging from Herge’s adventures of Tin Tin to archive papers held at the London Zoological Society as the inspiration for her silk and wool print scarves. Each scarf is printed in Scotland and hand finished in England but for Autumn Winter, imaginary travels to foreign climes such as the Himalayas and Tibet elicits a collection featuring fauna of the region and symbolic imagery.

Linton’s current installation in the Couverture store window is inspired by the famous Japanese painting by Hokusai but features her own fictional muse Ermantrude; a zoologist travelling around the world in the early twentieth century, and also features, of course, her scarves.

RACHEL COMEY

Launched in 2001, American born designer Rachel Comey’s label has fast become the uniform of choice for cool downtown girls with its vintage inspired, rock and roll feel. Worn by the likes of Maggie Gyllenhaal, Kirsten Dunst and Courtney Love, few are aware that the former Theory design consultant originally started out as a menswear label (David Bowie wore a Rachel Comey shirt on Letterman.) However such was the popularity of the men’s collection with women (they bought up all the small sizes in Barneys) that in 2003 she launched her womenswear line, which is now the mainstay of the brand. Comey explains, “Materials, craftsmanship, utility and a sense of humour are important in my collections…I don’t like things to be too accessorized, but I do like them to be playful.

Delicate tastes and refined selections comprise the childrens collection at Couverture & The Garbstore

ATSUYO YANG and AKiKO MUKAE bring you a fresh approach to fashion accessories design.
The two of them share an affinity for screen printing and look to add illustration to ordinary everyday items that appear to tell a story.

The Skull & Crossbones Toy carry case is a great choice from their collection. An edgy and unique accent on an otherwise merely practical childs accessory.

The Brand GITMAN BROTHERS

The Clothing.

To understand the full meaning of making a great American shirt, one can get an excellent overall view by looking at the history of the Gitman Brothers Shirt Company.

At the end of World War II, Max Gitman was a struggling shirt contractor in Brooklyn, NY, making high quality shirts for the excellent stores of his time. He, like many of the other better shirt makers, was a first generation immigrant trying to carve out a living in New York City, where rackets and unions after the war gained control over soft good manufacturing. The other makers of that time (the predecessors of Sero, Gant, Eagle, Kenneth Gordon, and virtually every other great shirt in the country) joined together and as a group decided to move away from New York City to an area of about a 150 mile radius in Pennsylvania to ply their trade.

Because these men were skilled teachers in the craft of fine shirt making, they in essence over time converted a large segment of the population in this area into skilled shirt makers, training all operators to have an eye toward achieving perfect cotton shirts. This area became a “hotbed” of better shirt making much like Como is to fine silk or Biella is to finest woolens. Shirt making in our area became part of the culture.

Over the last thirty years, many of these factories have closed and moved to the south of the United States, as the area is a high wage area. Many have also moved to obtain non union labor more often out of the country to achieve cheap labor prices.
