Information overload? Try content curation

March 19, 2010 by promotions

‘Content curation’ (the selection, preservation, maintenance and collection and archiving of assets) is a new term and will be a major Web trend for 2010. People are creating stories, photos and other ‘content’ at a rate that is outpacing our ability to consume it. Information overload has become an increasingly common complaint and all our tweets, posts, images etc need to be collected and organised … apparently.

Twitter users alone produce 50 million Tweets a day, while Facebook reports that users are posting 60 million  status updates a day. And the number is growing. That’s…….too many to comprehend every year.

Digg, the site which allows users to vote on news stories, pictures and videos, this week unveiled plans to become a hub for sharing links on the Web. If your friends are sharing media on Facebook, Twitter and other sites, Digg intends to provide a personalised home page that filters the Web based on your friends’ activities. The site’s new plan is to analyse the news stories, videos and images shared by your friends on these sites and rank them by relevance.

Could it work? Might it help define the future of content sharing? Until now getting your story on the home page of Digg was a lottery at best and impossible at worst.

So is Digg’s new venture that original? I’m not sure. Some of it sounds familiar already. Is it just another way of re-organising the same information? We”ll have to wait to find out.

Google acquires photo editing site Picnik

March 2, 2010 by promotions

Google Inc has acquired the online photo-editing site Picnik, as the top search engine continues with its acquisition programme having taken over three new companies in about three weeks.

Google did not disclose the financial terms of the deal for Picnik, a 5-year-old Seattle-based start-up which said on its website that it has 20 employees.

Google spokesman Andrew Pederson said in an email message that the Picnik team has joined Google’s Seattle office and will work with Google’s Picasa group. Picasa is Google’s Web photo sharing service.

The deal is the latest example of Google’s increasing appetite for acquisitions, as the company’s core Internet search business has benefited from a recovery in the advertising sector.

Fashion designer Alexander McQueen found dead

February 11, 2010 by promotions

Lee McQueen, the founder of fashion house Alexander McQueen, was found dead at his flat today, aged just 40 years old. Paramedics called to his home pronounced him dead at the scene. Police said his death was not being treated as suspicious.

A statement said his family were “devastated” at the “tragic news”, and said that they shared “a sense of shock and grief”.

A former British Designer of the Year winner, Mr McQueen started his career as an apprentice in Savile Row, where he learned how to make jackets at Gieves and Hawkes.

In 1996, the man nicknamed “the hooligan of English fashion”, with his close-cropped hair and Doc Martens, was named head designer at the Paris couture house of Givenchy.

He will be sadly missed by all who knew him and by many who didn’t. He was a huge talent and cited by some as a genius in the fashion world.

British Fashion Council partner with BAFTA

February 11, 2010 by promotions

The British Fashion Council (BFC) has announced a partnership with the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) that aims to create and develop links between London’s fashion and film industries. The partnership is announced a week before both London Fashion Week and the Orange British Academy Film Awards take place, when the spotlight is on the capital’s creative talent. This link will form part of a new initiative from the British Fashion Council that will position fashion at the heart of the creative industries by forging partnerships with other organisations in the arts.

Chairman of the British Fashion Council Harold Tillman said: “This initiative is a fantastic way of forging relationships between our creative industries. The red carpet continues to play an increasingly important role in a designer’s marketing programme, as images are instantly distributed to audiences worldwide. This relationship between the British Fashion Council and BAFTA is an invaluable way of promoting British talent from both industries on an international platform.”

London Fashion Week is one of the UK’s highest profile trade only fashion and shopping events and takes place from Thursday 25th to Sunday 28th February within the official Fashion Week venue – Somerset House. If you want to know the key looks for the coming seasons, this is an event not to miss.

Vodafone in Twitter embarrassment

February 10, 2010 by promotions

Last Friday afternoon, mobile phone giant Vodafone really had egg on its corporate face when it had to suspend an employee after he had posted an obscene and homophobic tweet on Twitter. At first bosses thought their account had been hacked, but it turned out that a member of staff was responsible.

Vodafone immediately deleted the tweet and quickly issued an apology to its 8,600 plus followers. A Vodafone spokesman tweeted, “We’re really sorry. A severe breach of rules by staff in our building, dealing with that internally. Please keep your faith in us.”

But the damage had already been done. The original tweet had been retweeted dozens of times and thus circulated all over worldwide twitterdom. The said employee must have sat there, panicking and trying to hit undo, delete or whatever.

Of course seasoned twitterati know there isn’t such a feature on Twitter. What’s done is done and there is obviously a lesson to be learnt. If as a company you are going to allow your employees access to your corporate Twitter account a) make sure you can trust them and b) don’t p&%s them off on Friday afternoon. 140 characters may not sound like much, but its enough to damage your company’s reputation in the wrong hands.

Me….a football fan….I’d never have believed it!

February 5, 2010 by promotions

I’ve never been a massive football fan or a fan at all really, but ever since getting involved with the brand new www.absolutefooty.com website, I’m starting to get quite excited about it. The site is a mine of information for football fans of all ages and levels and should appeal to both adults and kids. Absolute Footy have also teamed up with Tony Carr, Youth Coach with West Ham United FC for many years, whose testimonial match is being played at Upton Park on 5th May 2010. It should be an exciting game with a number of well known players having already signed up to play.

What’s more there are lots of football goodies for sale on the site including team mugs, caps, beanie bears, garden gomes, bath ducks, towels, key rings and much more.

And what a good year this is to get excited, as it’s not long till England attempt to repeat the glory of the 1966 World Cup in South Africa this summer. And I am not being sarcastic – this could well be the year they do it.

Just a shame it has to be marred by John Terry being sacked as England captain. According to www.fifa.com “…the 29-year-old was informed of the decision by Fabio Capello today during a brief meeting at Wembley this afternoon. The decision comes after allegations surrounding the Chelsea skipper’s private life came to light.”

It is alleged that Terry had an affair with Vanessa Perroncel, the ex-girlfriend of England team-mate Wayne Bridge, also a former club-mate of Terry’s at Chelsea.

“As a captain with the team, John Terry has displayed extremely positive behaviour,” added Capello. “However, I have to take into account other considerations and what is best for all of the England squad. What is best for all of the England team has inspired my choice and John Terry was notified first.”

Die IE6 die!

February 2, 2010 by promotions

If Google has decided that from the beginning of March, certain key functionality in Google Docs and Google Sites “would not work properly” with IE6 and older versions of other browsers, then maybe the rest of us should finally follow suit.

“Older browsers were not designed to handle new web-based applications, which means they don’t support modern web technologies like HTML 5 and advanced JavaScript processing,” a Google spokesperson said. “For example, IE6 doesn’t support HTML 5, and IE6 and [Firefox 2] do not process JavaScript nearly as efficiently as newer versions of IE and FF.”

You know what it’s like. You design a beautiful all singing, all dancing website with all the latest functionality and then someone emails you to say that their colleague’s sister’s husband’s brother got this or that error on his ancient laptop or the menu didn’t work or something was sitting behind something else in the navigation.

‘What browser is he using,’ you ask, already knowing what the answer is going to be.

‘Er, IE6 I think.’

Enough said.
