With over 20 years experience of retail and buying in the multi-branded mid to high end fashion industry and eight years of designing, developing and managing bespoke transactional websites in the same sector, we ask Andy to divulge his thoughts on the current menswear retailer climate.
“There are a couple of factors that overshadow future confidence in the independent retail menswear sector. As the UK economy is showing little sign of recovery, we need the Eurozone crisis to be sorted out pretty quickly to inspire some consumer confidence and change the seemingly constant daily gloomy economic news output. With recent reports pointing to further unsettled times ahead in Europe due to the recent election results in Greece and France, the incessant bandwagon of government bashing by broadcasters is extremely damaging for the economy of the UK and also pretty unfair as the economic mess and debt left by the previous government was so huge that it won’t be fixed overnight and most probably will take at least a decade while the UK recalibrates and reinvents itself.
By far the biggest threat is more micro-economic and lies at the hands of the retailers themselves. A reflection of weak balance sheets, poor cash flow and feckless retailers trying to establish a foothold in the online market through red ticket marketing, reckless early season discounting has been far too prevalent, especially from the A/W11 season. It is now early May, still only midway through S/S12, the best of the Summer weather to come, yet the consumer has been bombarded with an array of online and in store discounts and promotions. This sort of action doesn’t only put the profitability of a season in doubt, it puts the whole industry in jeopardy for the foreseeable future.
It is hard to see this juggernaut stopping as retailers struggle to make ends meet from season to season. Even a concerted joint effort from retailers to end the lemming like battle to out discount each other will quite possibly be not enough. The customer is now so used to red ticket purchases they are prepared to wait to make the purchases they want or need. A few years ago, even before the onset of early and midseason online discounting the natural beginning of seasonal sales had been mid June for the Summer season and Boxing Day for the Winter season, just before the ideal selling periods for the respective seasonal weather. This was not an ideal selling window then and the early discounting is now exacerbating the problem.
Where will it all end? It is hard to say, but the outlook for a major percentage of retailers will be bleak, if not terminal. It is time for them to reassess their infrastructure and strategies to survive. It will take courage, commitment and patience to do so but the status quo is not sustainable. Too many have rushed into e-commerce without laying foundations or strategies for the future and have had to resort to discounting to achieve any turnover at all. In many cases the wrong third party service providers have been employed to build their websites, no provisions have been made for the correct day to day content management or marketing, leaving a swathe of websites that are contributing to the downfall of a great and exciting industry.

How long have you been an affiliate?
I have been a fashion affiliate for 5 years now, and still really enjoy it. It is a fast paced industry and it took a while to learn what to promote and when due to the seasonal collections.
How many sites do you have?
As an affiliate it is best not to put all your eggs in one basket, I would love just to have one hugely popular site however I update 12 sites a day.
What do you find frustrating about affiliate marketing?
Not getting any appreciation for the hard work you put in by some of the brands, who feel the only reason they are in affiliate marketing is because their competitors are, or that they will lose out on profits, and as a result they will not promote any of the things you do for them.
What do you like most about affiliate marketing?
Working from home and being your own boss, and also the opportunities are endless if you are willing to go the extra mile.
Any affiliates, brands, networks, you admire?
Affiliate Marketing has moved on since the early years of bedroom affiliates with large companies putting up some amazing sites.
What do you want most from agencies?
I want them to think outside the box! Discount codes, banners and best sellers all have their place but to stand-out affiliates need to be able to give their readers material that is actually better than what is on the merchant sites they are promoting.
Any tips you feel happy to share?
If you are serious about promoting a brand get in touch with them direct as you can then form a solid partnership. A number of merchants have closed their affiliate schemes however I have continued to work with them privately due to the bond we created.
